October has a big act to follow after the beautiful September we’ve had but the sheer number of big events happening in 1066 Country will ensure it doesn’t disappoint. Bonfire season begins early in Sussex and celebrations in Hastings and Battle are sure to go with a bang this year. Halloween and half term offer plenty of fun family days out too. Feel and taste 1066 Country in our forests, gardens, vineyards and places to eat and drink. Discover the revamped 1066 Country Walk and find out what’s new this year in 1066 Country. Read on for more!

Look closely over the next few months as you stroll through Bedgebury Pinetum and you'll find all kinds of surprises as our blog post here shows. Experience autumn colour as the seasons turn, with a walk or cycle ride around Bewl Water or a visit to Herstmonceux Castle Estate or Michelham Priory.

Don’t miss Great Dixter's exotic garden, at its best through to the end of October and the views across the Rother Valley and vineyards from the turrets of Bodiam Castle are spectacular in autumn.

Tour a vineyard as the grape harvest is in full swing. Suzanne talks here about her vineyard discovery tour last year.

It's wild mushroom season so take part in a tutored foraging and cookery day. Try game and autumn cookery or join TV chef, C J Jackson, for a Hastings catch of the day cookery workshop. Book for a gourmet autumn taster or game and Burgundy evening. Our farm shops, breweries and fruit farms are the best places to shop for a taste of 1066 Country.

We're delighted to announce the official launch of the upgraded 1066 Country Walk! Follow in the footsteps of William the Conqueror along the 31 miles, beginning at Pevensey Castle, landing place of the Norman invaders, through the historic town of Battle and via Winchelsea to Rye. 10 sculptures by Keith Pettit, 18 information panels, new signposts, places to stay and visit, eat and drink in on the way. More information, maps and photos here. Time to pull on your walking boots!

We are thrilled that the re-enactment of The Battle of Hastings will return to Battle Abbey on the 9 & 10 October. Taking place on the very spot where King Harold and Duke William of Normandy fought in 1066, don't miss 500 reenactors recreate the drama and intensity of this legendary conflict.
