Fort Talk March: The Big Gun Arms Race - A Victorian Technological Revolution

About

The Royal Armouries museum at Fort Nelson presents the third in a series of special after-hours Fort Talks on Wednesday 27 March with guest speaker Nicholas Hall, Curator Emeritus of Artillery.

Nicholas Hall, formerly keeper of Artillery at the museum, played a key role in helping the Royal Armouries and Hampshire County Council to develop Fort Nelson from a derelict site to a must see attraction, ranked amongst Portsmouth's top five attractions on TripAdvisor.

During the evening, Nicholas will reveal how during the mid-19th century gun designers began to transform what was possible by using new materials and technologies developed from the Industrial Revolution. The talk will examine allegations of government favouritism and how patent infringements flew thick and fast between rival engineers such as Armstrong, Blakely and Whitworth. As a consequence Britain fell behind German and French achievements.

Using the remarkable artillery collection of the Royal Armouries at Fort Nelson, Nicholas will make connections between major technological advances in artillery to illustrate the murky stories of the past.
