Illustrating the Terra Nova expedition
Captain Scott's Antarctic expeditions are remembered for many things but not often for their pivotal role in shaping the way that we conceive a Continent. As part of the Terra Nova (1910-1913) expedition's extensive scientific programme, Captain Scott personally pioneered the largest illustrative project of the Antarctic to date, led by Herbert Ponting, the first professional photographer to visit the Continent and Dr Edward Wilson, the last of the Great Expedition artists. Between them their skills inspired the unveiling of a new Continent in ways which still define its illustration today.
Hear from Dr David M. Wilson FZS, great nephew of Dr Edward Wilson, as he uncovers the fascinating photography of the ambitious and heroic age of Antarctic exploration in this evening talk, held in our Field Studies Centre, as the final part of our Antarctic talk series.
When you purchase your ticket it is for the in-person event, however you will also be sent a zoom link if you would prefer to watch the talk from home.
