Whether you're looking for fashion, antiques, jewellery, organic food or crafts - there's something to suit every taste. For non-shoppers or those who need a respite from all that retail, we've chosen a selection of destinations with lots of cafes and charming places to take a breather.
Bicester Village has over 100 luxury retail outlets with collections from Calvin Klein, Karen Millen and Nicole Farhi to name but a few. Whilst the nearby High Wycombe is still referred to as the centre of the furniture trade having established a prestigious reputation from its production of chairs throughout the 19th century. Take time to peruse the many quirky offerings in both these and other villages and towns across the area, where some real hidden gems can be found.
The Isle of Wight is not only a top romantic destination, it's also an excellent place for jewellery and craft shopping. Check out some of the delightful designs at Theodosia, a jewellery and silversmith workshop in Newport's St Thomas Square, or browse though the delights on show at the craft shop at Quay Arts.
Portsmouth's stunning new waterfront development, Gunwharf Quays is perfect for sauntering in and out of shops: with over 85 designer outlet stores including Guess, Karen Millen, Whistles, Ted Baker and Paul Smith - that's a lot of sauntering. The giant Festival Place in Basingstoke and Bluewater in Kent are both designed to be stress-free shopping venues that will keep you entertained for hours...
There's a superb selection of independent shops in Hastings High Street and George Street - from antique and bric-a-brac shops, local craft and art shops, furniture and pine shops. Foodies should pay a visit to Judges Organic Bakery which has been a business since 1826 and is now owned by the founders of Green & Black's Chocolate.
In Brighton, soak up the quaint atmosphere of The Lanes - great for antiques, jewellery and fashion - and there's a host of independent boutiques and the best high street shops in Brighton town centre. Take a break in one of the many cute cafés and cool restaurants, or maybe grab some traditional fish and chips at Bankers on Western Road and take it down to the seafront.
Rye is an antique hunter's delight with many shops to browse in. The High Street also has an intriguing mix of independently owned shops, specialising in clothes, hats and shoes, leatherware, records and books, and an excellent cook shop. And the art galleries sell works by local artists and potters.
Shopping is a real treat on Rochester's Victorian High Street - it's one of the few places in the country that is completely free of chain stores. Here's your chance to buy those superb little goodies in antique, craft, gift and designer shops. There's even an old-fashioned candy store as well as Baggins, the country's largest second-hand bookshop - a superior haunt for magpies and bookworms.
