Runnymede and Ankerwycke

Runnymede is a pleasant patchwork of history and habitats; an area of water meadows, ponds, grassland and broadleaved woodland rich in flora and fauna. It was on this site in 1215 that King John sealed the Magna Carta, an event commemorated by the American Bar Association Memorial. Also at Runnymede are the John F. Kennedy Memorial, standing on an acre of land gifted to the USA, and the Fairhaven Lodges and Kiosks, designed by Edwin Lutyens. It’s in one of these lodges that you will find the Magna Carta tea-room, open year-round for light lunches, cream teas and seasonal treats.

A network of footpaths links the Magna Carta memorial with two others: one to the late American President, John F. Kennedy, and one to the 20,000 Royal Air Force airmen killed in the Second World War, who have no known grave. Other trails of varying difficulty take you past all of Runnymede’s key features, including Hew Locke’s installation The Jurors, an homage to the global history of justice.

Across the river, little-known Ankerwycke hides treasures such as the ruins of a Benedictine priory, the National Trust’s oldest tree and a secret snowdrop wood.

Come for a riverside picnic, to learn something new about history or wildlife, to embark on an adventure trail with the family, or simply to enjoy the outdoors. There’s nowhere in the world quite like Runnymede.
