Horseracing has taken place on top of the South Downs since 1801, when the 3rd Duke of Richmond held a private race meeting for the Sussex Militia. It was such a success that the following year he held Goodwood’s first public race meeting.
Today, in addition to the world famous Qatar Goodwood Festival, there are 14 days of high-class racing at Goodwood, where the colour, excitement and spectacle of seeing racehorses and jockeys close up is more than match by the racecourse’s spectacular setting in the heart of the Sussex Downs.
While the racecourse is the jewel in ‘England’s Greatest Sporting Estate’, Goodwood has much more to offer; it hosts two world-famous motorsport events, has two magnificent championship golf courses and welcomes guests to the Goodwood Hotel, which has 91 suites and bedrooms as well as two restaurants and extensive leisure facilities.
At the heart of this beautiful Estate is Goodwood House. Set in immaculate parkland, its meticulously restored State Apartments are open to visitors from March to October with a magnificent art collection on display. Across the Estate learn to fly at the historic Goodwood Aerodrome or perhaps follow in the tyre tracks of legends on the iconic Motor Circuit.
Goodwood’s special atmosphere, exhilarating sporting occasions, consistently high standards, attention to detail and sense of fun make it a truly magical place to be.
