The Fountain

About

Dating from the 16th century, this former farmhouse is full of rustic charm. Standing behind a red-brick wall trimmed with colourful flowers in season, it sits at the heart of a lovely village and is a shining example of a quintessential English pub.

The aroma of wood smoke greets you as you enter the several small bar areas, complete with inglenook fireplaces, original timbers, wonky walls and floors and solid farmhouse tables. Probably one of the coziest places on earth to come in from the cold! Friendly locals congregate at the bar to sample the range of drinks, which include ales from the Cask-Marque accredited cellar and an excellent selection of carefully chosen wines.

The pub is run by a father and son duo that share the family values for local produce, excellent service and freshly prepared food. The smell of heart-warming, wholesome cooking wafts from the kitchen, which is showcased on the seasonal menu that combines produce from Sussex suppliers, fruit, vegetable and herbs from the pub’s own kitchen garden and the talent of dedicated chefs.

In summer relax in the large established garden, where children will be enchanted by ducks on the pond and rabbits in the adjoining fields. The Fountain has its share of famous people stories to tell. Among them, it was often frequented by actor and local resident Sir Laurence Olivier and the inn was the setting for Sir Paul McCartney’s 1979 music video ‘Wonderful Christmastime’.
