Battle of Britain Memorial

About

The National Memorial to the Few at Capel-le-Ferne, on the famous white cliffs between Dover and Folkestone in Kent, occupies a special place in the hearts and minds of all those who have visited this moving site.

While the Memorial can be accessed on foot at any time, via the side gate or the coastal path, the car park and the new Wing building, including the Scramble Experience, The Geoffrey Page Centre, The Cockpit Cafe and the shop and toilets, are open as follows:

1 March to 30 September, 10am – 5pm (last entry/purchase 4.30pm)

1 October to 28 February, 10am – 4pm (last entry to Experience/cafe purchase 3.30pm).

Maintained by the Battle of Britain Memorial Trust, the site at Capel-le-Ferne is dedicated to Churchill’s famous “Few” who fought in the skies overhead to keep this country free from invasion.

The Memorial itself inspires quiet reflection on the bravery and sacrifice shown by the aircrew – fewer than 3,000 men – who flew, fought and sometimes died in probably the most crucial battle fought by this country in the whole of the 20th century.

The Christopher Foxley-Norris Memorial Wall lists the names of all those who took part in the Battle of Britain, while a replica Spitfire and Hurricane stand nearby as a reminder of the iconic machines they flew to victory.

After being opened by Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh in March 2015, our iconic new Wing building is also helping visitors find out more about the Battle.

The high-tech, multi-media Scramble Experience gives people a taste of what life was like to be one of the Few in 1940, while the Geoffrey Page Centre has been designed as a learning environment that is now available to schools.

A retail area and a first floor cafe with stunning views over the Channel towards France completes this fantastic new building, which was opened at the start of the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain in 2015.
