St Bartholomews Church

Exterior of Church

St Bartholomew's is a Grade 1 listed Victorian Church famous for its Art Nouveau furnishings. Built by A.D. Wagner in 1874 and desgned by local architect Edmund Scott, it is the tallest Parish Church (135 ft) in Britain if not Europe. It is of Italian Gothic style and has fine brickwork. The High Altar is reached by marble steps and is covered by a 45ft Byzantine style baldachino. This is faced with marble and alabaster, the ceiling is covered by gold mosaic and mother of pearl. This, together with the marble pulpit and font are part of Henry Wilson's Art Nouveau design for the Church as is the silver alter. The mosaics behind the altar are by F Hamilton Jackson. The Stations of the Cross came from Bruges in 1881.
