Tourism South East Member

A 17thC house where Jane Austen lived from 1809-1817, and wrote or revised her 6 great novels. Copy letters, pictures and memorabilia. There is also a garden with old- fashioned flowers. Old bakehouse in courtyard with brick bread oven, brick wash tub and Jane's donkey cart. Large collection of documentary material. Furniture and a quilt made by Jane and her mother and sister. Illustration of her books and of her various homes. Situated in pretty village.

Public Transport Directions

Nearest station is Alton. From station up to main road, turn left and walk straight through Alton to Chawton. Brown signed. Also Stagecoach bus 64 from Winchester or Alton. Alight at Alton Butts and walk 0.50 mile to Chawton.
