White Cliffs Country
Enrich your senses - wander along England's edge, over the high White Cliffs, along the shingle beach by the old town of Deal and onto Sandwich with its wind-swept sand dunes and golf links. From the White Cliffs gaze over the Channel towards the French shore, 21 miles away. With a visit to Dover Castle you can stand in the footsteps of British World War II leader Winston Churchill. Since medieval times, walkers have trudged their way over this part of Kent, following the Pilgrims Way, North Downs Way or Saxon Shore. Winding their way through the countryside, parks, gardens, towns, villages and fortifications. At the northern end of White Cliffs lies the seaside town of Deal, as attractive today as it was 200 years ago. The townscape of Georgian houses crammed into narrow lanes makes Deal an attractive place to explore with delights around every corner. Visit the stately home of Walmer Castle or the popular Deal Castle built during the reign of Henry VIII. Ancient medieval Sandwich was once one of the most important ports in southern England, now with its former town walls and intricate street pattern it is a charming place to explore on foot or by bicycle.
