Rye and Winchelsea
Perched on a hill, the medieval town of Rye is the sort of place you thought existed only in your imagination. Almost suspended in time, Rye’s unhurried atmosphere and enchanting streets draw visitors with their warm welcome. It’s small enough to make you feel at home almost straight away but holds enough secret treasures to entice you to stay much longer. Whereas many towns boast a colourful past but have little evidence of it, Rye has many ancient and interesting buildings that bear testimony to its eventful past. When you are in need of a treat or want to escape the pressures of modern life, come to Rye. With only 5000 inhabitants, it retains a village atmosphere and old-fashioned values. A town to be explored and enjoyed on foot. Neighbouring Winchelsea is officially the smallest town in England. This charming town was built in 1287 under the royal patronage of Edward I. It remains a delightful and relaxing place from which to explore the beautiful surrounding countryside and coast, which includes vineyards, nature reserves, an extensive network of trails and many historic surprises.
