Marden Parish

One of the smallest parishes in West Sussex and lying within the South Downs just south of the South Downs Way, Marden Parish is totally rural with two small villages and a population of less than 100. There are no shops, pubs or public transport in the village. The village of East Marden in centred around the thatched well at the meeting point of three lanes. This is overlooked by a thirteenth century church, cottages and houses. There is a dairy farm providing the only employment in the village. The smaller village of North Marden is formed by a circle of houses and cottages around a central paddock. The small, unusual church on the edge of the farmyard was said to be the first stopping place for pilgrims travelling from Winchester to Canterbury.
