During the sailing season the waterfront is a kaleidoscope of colourful sails, whose focal point is the Royal Yacht Squadron, housed in the former Cowes Castle. Each year Cowes plays host to Skandia Cowes Week and is the start point of the Round the Island Race. The narrow pedestrianised high street is bursting with interesting boutiques, antique shop, chandlers, delicatessens, restaurants and lively pubs. You'll find the high-speed ferry to Southampton at adjacent Fountain Quay. East Cowes is the terminus of the car and passenger ferry from Southampton. The town has its own small shopping centre, lively marina and seafront promenade, with fine Solent views and a popular paddling pool. It is also home to the magnificent Osborne House, Queen Victoria's favourite seaside residence.
