Petersfield

About

Set in the glorious countryside of the South Downs, Petersfield is an ancient market town originally built as a Norman 'new town' at the end of the 11th Century. It is now a pleasant place for shopping and eating out.

The main square is an attractive focal point providing the perfect venue for twice weekly markets on Saturdays and Wednesdays. There is a Farmers' Market on the first Sunday of every month.

At its centre stands the magnificent equestrian statue of King William III. The Church of St. Peter dates back to 1120 and retains many original features.

Petersfield has a vibrant musical and artistic scene. The Petersfield Musical Festival is a week-long musical extravaganza in March, and has taken place since 1901. The town was also once the home and studio of local artist Flora Twort.

Petersfield Museum, housed in the former Victorian police station and courthouse, tells the story of 10,000 years of history in Petersfield and the surrounding areas through a wonderfully diverse mix of art, archaeology, social history, photography and temporary exhibitions.

Nearby, Butser Ancient Farm is a fascinating place to visit, showcasing Ancient Britain through experimental archaeology. Sky Park Farm is just 4 miles away, a working deer farm with an outdoor play area, an ideal chance to feed the deer.

There are numerous walks and cycle rides in the area, in particular at Queen Elizabeth Country Park or why not give Buriton Literary Walk a go inspired by W H Hudson or head to

A range of hotel and bed and breakfast and self-catering accommodation is available in Petersfield, all listed on this site is quality assessed.
