Birthplace of Charles Dickens and home to Sherlock Holmes creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Portsmouth, in Hampshire is a great literary City.

Follow the free Charles Dickens Walks and let your imagination take you back to the era of his lifetime. Visit the the Charles Dickens' Birthplace Museum to see a small collection of memorabilia. 2012 marks the bicentenary of Dickens' birth, and celebrations are being held in Portsmouth throughout the year.

Conan Doyle moved to Southsea in June 1882 to set up a medical practice in Elm Grove. Whilst waiting for patients, Conan Doyle began writing stories and composed his first novels, The Mystery of Cloomber, not published until 1888, and the unfinished Narrative of John Smith, which would go unpublished until 2011.
