John Piper: A Very British Artist at River & Rowing Museum

About

New for autumn 2017! This autumn, the gallery will be focussing on Piper’s collaborative work with Benjamin Britten.

John Piper is one of Britain’s most prolific and versatile artists of the 20th Century.  Appointed by Kenneth Clarke to be an official War Artist during the Second World War, the Museum’s gallery demonstrates Piper’s outstanding ability to diversify from paintings and drawings to stained glass and ceramics and also features unseen works from private collections.

This autumn the gallery will be shining a spotlight on Piper’s relationship with Benjamin Britten, in particular Britten’s final opera ‘Death in Venice’ in 1973.  Piper’s new and innovative view of Venice’s labyrinthine streets and canals united many of his interests and techniques.  With Myfanwy Piper writing the libretto for the opera, this was truly a collaborative affair.   The gallery is thrilled to be able to showcase unique items from concept designs to set models.

“Abstract painting in the hands of a sensitive painter has a classical appearance but a romantic soul.”
