Alfriston
Alfriston is a must-visit village. On the banks of the Cuckmere River, at the foot of the beautiful South Downs and now situated within the boundaries of the new National Park, there is so much here to interest visitors that it has often been said that this is probably one of the most visited destinations in the country. There is much to admire - the medieval narrow, twisting High Street has a surprising wealth and variety of shops. Of importance for resident and visitor alike is a handsome bow windowed Post Office and Village Stores. On the opposite corner stands a busy newsagent and facing it the award winning bookshop, Much Ado.
Other temptations include the first of the now famous Steamer Trading cookshops, jewellery and fashion boutiques, shops selling antiques, gifts and souvenirs and an art gallery. With many places to eat and drink ranging from cosy teashops and elegant restaurants to friendly pubs, you're sure to find something to suit all tastes.
Minutes from the High Street is the Tye village green, the Clergy House (which was the first ever property bought by the National Trust) and the imposing St Andrew's Church known as 'the Cathedral of the Downs'. The village diary of events lists a Summer Music Festival, a traditional August Bank Holiday Festival week and a Dickensian evening in early December.
This is a busy village with an interest in the past and any eye to the future. Current aspirations - just plans on paper at present - are for a local museum and a vineyard to challenge our friends across the Channel and add even more reasons for visiting Alfriston.
