Getting around

Getting around the Beautiful South couldn’t be easier. The rail and road networks provide easy and fast access to the capital and to all points of the region.

Rail

A comprehensive rail network ensures easy access to all Beautiful South destinations.   Advance booking your train ticket can save money. Visit raileasy  or the trainline.

Coach

Travelling by coach in South East England is an affordable and relaxing way to see the region. National Express offer travel to over 900 UK destinations and GreyhoundUK have a network of low-cost routes in the region.

Car

The South East of England is one of the most-visited regions of the UK, due to its proximity to London and its close links to the Continent. It has a well-developed road network with the M25 ring road connecting the region radiating around London via the M2, M3, M4, M20 and M23 motorways.

As well as the M25, the M20 is the main motorway link between Dover and London; the M3 connects Southampton to London and the M27 around Southampton connects the city with Portsmouth.

Cycle

The Beautiful South boasts an impressive network of cycle routes, whether you’re looking to go from town to town or to explore some of its famous countryside. Sustrans is a leading UK charity enabling people to travel by foot, bike or public transport for more of the journeys taken every day. Their site includes details of easy and more challenging cycle routes and rides that will make your Beautiful South visit more rewarding.

Island links

The Isle of Wight is the ‘jewel’of the Beautiful South, situated off the south coast and easily accessible from Portsmouth, Southampton and Lymington.

From Portsmouth you can reach the island by Hovertravel in just ten minutes. You can also take the Wightlink ferry or catamaran to Fishbourne or Ryde or if you are in the New Forest,  Wightlink’s Lymington to Ryde service will get you to the island in 22 minutes.

Southampton also offers fast and frequent service to Ryde via Red Funnel ferries

International access couldn’t be easier with Gatwick, Heathrow and Southampton airports in the heart of the region and 5 international ferry ports as well as the Channel Tunnel linking us to the near continent.
