The Bear Hotel
HotelThis 13th Century Coaching Inn built on the old A4 London to Bath coaching route, said to stand on the Crossroads of England, has been welcoming guests since the days it was owned by Henry VIII; who gave it to Queen Anne of Cleeves and in 1541/2 to Queen Katherine Parr who survived him.
During the civil wars and prior to the second battle of Newbury, Charles I made The Bear his Headquarters; many other famous people have stayed at The Bear over the years including the two famous diarists, John Evelyn and Samuel Peppys.
To-day The Bear has moved on again blending the old existing architectural features with a modern twist to take it into yet another century!
Contemporary bathrooms blend with the old beams and the light airy décor and great beds with cool Egyptian cotton sheets and refreshingly great showers, make for a relaxed stay. Technology has moved on also since ‘Henry’s’ days, with Wi-fi and hard wired internet access in all rooms, plasma television with 12 channels to while away the hours.
Food has changed a bit as well, the hotel’s Brasserie has 2 Rosettes for its food while the Bar offers simple dishes and a range of changing specials from the blackboard. If the weather is good you can sit and enjoy a gin and tonic in the Courtyard which can be a real sun trap!
